MacGourmet for iPad? Yes!

I've had a lot of requests for information on an iPad version of MacGourmet, so I thought I'd do a quick post on it.

Will there be an iPad version of MacGourmet? Yes, I'm going to do everything I can to make sure that there is. The fact that an iPhone version of MacGourmet already exists helps a lot, but my plan isn't to just make a warmed over version of the iPhone version. No, my goal is to make a version of MacGourmet specifically for the iPad, the same way that Apple is making iPad versions of the iWork apps available for it. The iPad provides a lot more functionality than the iPhone, and I want to take advantage of that.

To do all this though, I really want to get one into my hot little hands first, so that I can design everything for it just right. There is also the matter of building a better way to get information to and from the mobile versions (web-based instead of the current Bonjour-based system) so that you can edit your data anywhere, which is something I've already been working on for both the iPad and iPhone.

So, long story short, yes indeed, I'm planning an iPad version of MacGourmet. Stay tuned to this space for updates.

MacGourmet Updated to 2.4.4: Fixes Some Rare and Minor Issues

Future update news! For the near future, updates to the Mac and iPhone versions of MacGourmet are going to be infrequent and done only on an as-needed basis, because I'm hard at work on MacGourmet 3 and planning for MacGourmet touch 2. Keep your eyes peeled to this space or future updates as work on both progresses.

MacGourmet touch Version 1.1 submitted to App Store

I've submitted 1.1 to Apple for approval. Typical turnaround, if there are no issues, is around 2 weeks right now. The new release includes the following:

- A fix for a timeout issue some people have that prevents them from transferring data from their Mac to their iPhone/iPod touch because the transfer won't start.

- A new way of transferring data to your iPhone/iPod using files exported from MacGourmet. This allows people still using 10.4 to transfer their data, and it provides an alternative method of transfer to the networking based one.

You should get notified of the update when it's available.

UPDATE: Version 1.1 is now available. When you update your app, make sure that the version in Settings is listed as 1.1.0. I've had reports of iTunes updates failing, and leaving people with "corrupted" versions that don't work correctly. When this happens, the solution is to first delete the app from your iPhone/iPod. Then connect your iPhone to iTunes and let the sync finish. After it does, you can then check MacGourmet in your list of apps, and reinstall it by pressing the button to update your iPhone. Once you do that, you should be able to transfer your data from the desktop version of MacGourmet to your iPhone using the network or new file transfer methods.

Optional Web Site Importers Updated

All of the optional web site importers have received updates for recent web site changes. You can download the latest versions from the web site importer page.

The updated importers include: BettyCrocker.com, CooksIllustrated.com, FoodAndWine.com, Hersheys.com, MyRecipes.com, and VegetarianTimes.com. Phew that was a mouthful!

To update all of the importers in one step, download the Importer All-Pack, and double-click on the package file to install all of the new versions.

MacGourmet Ready for Snow Leopard

It appears that all systems are go for MacGourmet (and MacGourmet Deluxe of course) on Snow Leopard. I haven't found any issues so far.

There is one bit of information that users of the Services menu do need to know though: On Snow Leopard, support for Mac OS X Services changed and they are totally configurable now. You do have to explicitly add your MacGourmet Services menu items to your Services menu though, they are no longer there by default.

To do this:

Open the Services Preferences from the Services menu in any app, in this case, Safari:

Then, look for the MacGourmet menu items, "Import Recipe From Web Page" and "Import Text Clipping" and check the boxes next to them:

Close Preferences, and that should be it, the MacGourmet Services have been enabled again.

The About box says it's version 1, but really, this was just the first test version that I was "noodling" around with. At the time, MacGourmet was just an idea that I was toying around with because I was getting interested in cooking and recipe collecting and couldn't really find a good database-based product (or really any at all for that matter) when I looked for one. Hard to believe this became the application available today.

When the first beta was finally released, MacGourmet looked something like this:

Finally, while version 2.4, still offers the same "Mail" 3-pane setup, it also allows you the option to make the interface look like this with the widescreen option:

What does the future hold? Development for version 3 is well under way (there's nothing to announce yet, beyond that it's being worked on), as are updates for MacGourmet touch and all 3 plug-ins. There are also some other exciting things already underway, so stay tuned!

Macworld Gives MacGourmet Glowing Review

Macworld just reviewed MacGourmet as a "Mac Gem" giving it 4.5 mice out of 5!

According to the reviewer:

If you’re a recipe geek and need a place to store, organize, and categorize your current and potential meals, look no further than MacGourmet. From the program’s recipe box metaphor to its flexible visuals, plug-in architecture, auto import functions, and smart searching, this is one of the most versatile and extensible programs available for any cook.

The review is pretty extensive and hits on just about everything. It's a great read for even current users: you may find out about things in the product you didn't even know were there!

The reviewer sums up her review with:

Released today are updates to all 3 MacGourmet add-on plug-ins:

Mealplan 1.1 is now available. It resolves printing issues for Leopard users, and fixes a handful of issues. For a full list of the changes, please see the release notes.

MacGourmet:Mealplan can be downloaded from the Mealplan page.

Cookbook 1.1 is now available. It resolves some cookbook creation problems, an occasional crasher and fixes a handful of issues. For a full list of the changes, please see the release notes.

MacGourmet:Cookbook can be downloaded from the Cookbook page.

Nutrition 1.3 is now available. It fixes a couple of calculation errors. For a full list of the changes, please see the release notes.

MacGourmet touch 1.0.2 Submitted to App Store

I've submitted 1.0.2 to Apple, typical turnaround has been 5 days or so. It includes bug fixes for the following:

- The "+ icon can now be tapped to add a new shopping list item.

- When editing a new item, the blinking cursor now shows that an editing session has been started.

- Shopping list aisle items are now sorted in a case-insensitive manner.

- More than one sync per session should be now possible without quitting or leaving the sync tab.

- Search now works over all item text fields, instead of just the item names.

- New shopping lists now start with a default item, allowing other items to be added without adding a recipe.

- Shopping list items now have disclosure buttons that allow the detail to be seen when not editing.

- Minor user interface and graphical tweaks for usability.

You should get notified of the update when it's available.

Feedback Wanted: Is this a Better Chef View?

The "chef view" in MacGourmet touch was kind of added in at the last minute, and I'm not sure that I'm happy with it.

I'd like some opinions, does this version work any better for people?

Note that the ingredients and directions scroll separately in this version, and that the directions text is also now larger, and the ingredients text smaller.
